External roller burnishing tool for CNC shaft finishing — Ø 3–12 mm band
TE Series

External Roller Burnishing Tools

Multi-roller tools for straight and stepped shafts — diameter range 3 to 20 mm. Mirror-finish surfaces (Rz < 1 µm) in a single pass on your existing CNC lathe.

  • Diameter range: Ø 3–20 mm (0.5 mm increments)
  • Surface finish: Rz < 1 µm in seconds
  • Straight shaft and stepped shaft variants
  • Self-feeding (helix) and machine-feeding options
  • Weldon 20 mm and 32 mm shanks

Overview

External Shaft Finishing in Seconds

AKS Teknik TE series external roller burnishing tools use multiple hardened rollers to compress the surface of a shaft, producing a mirror-like finish in a single pass. The rollers press inward against the rotating shaft — roughness peaks are plastically deformed into valleys — with no material removal.

Typical applications include bearing journals, seal surfaces, piston rods, pins and any external cylindrical surface requiring precise dimensional control and smooth finish.

  • Rz < 1 µm mirror-finish in a single pass
  • No chips, no dust, no sludge — environmentally clean
  • Surface hardened and polished simultaneously
  • Process takes seconds — not minutes
  • Compatible with all CNC and universal lathes
  • Replaces external grinding for many applications

Ordering

Order Code Structure

External burnishing tools follow the code format: TE [diameter] [type] [rollers]-[holder]

The coding logic is identical to internal tools (TI), with prefix TE instead of TI, and holder options limited to Weldon 20 and Weldon 32.

SegmentMeaningExample
TE Tool External TE
5-digit diameter Shaft Ø in mm × 100 01500 = Ø 15.00 mm
M / S / B Machine / Self-feeding / Stepped M
4-digit roller Qty (2 digits) + size mm (2 digits) 0505 = 5 × Ø 5 mm
Holder Weldon: 20 or 32 20

Example: TE 01500 M 0505-20 = External, Ø 15.00 mm, machine feeding, 5 × Ø 5 mm rollers, Weldon 20

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What shaft diameter range can be externally burnished?

AKS Teknik TE series external burnishing tools cover Ø 3 mm to Ø 20 mm in 0.5 mm increments. Two size bands are available: Ø 3–12 mm and Ø 12.5–20 mm. Larger diameters or custom sizes are available on request.

  • Can I burnish stepped shafts?

Yes. The stepped shaft variant (B) of external burnishing tools is designed for shafts with shoulders or steps where the tool cannot pass fully through. Machine-feeding variants (M) work best for straight, continuous shafts.

  • What surface finish is achievable on external surfaces?

External roller burnishing typically achieves Rz < 1 µm — a mirror-like finish. The result depends on pre-machined surface quality (Ra 1.6–3.2 µm from turning is ideal), material type and burnishing parameters.

  • What is the self-feeding (helix) variant?

Self-feeding external tools use helical rollers that pull the tool along the shaft automatically — you only need to provide workpiece rotation. This is ideal for universal lathes and manual machines. On CNC machines, the machine feed rate must be higher than the tool's natural pulling speed.

  • What tool holders are available for external burnishing?

External burnishing tools are available with Weldon 20 mm and Weldon 32 mm shanks. These fit all standard collet, hydraulic and shrink-fit tool holders.
